Read on to learn about why we love apprentices and what it’s like working at IT Champion:

It’s been a key part of our business to be involved with Exeter College’s National Apprenticeship Scheme, where we’ve taken on 7 apprentices since starting and given multiple young people the chance to enter the IT industry and build up the skills and knowledge they need to progress further. Even better, all of these apprentices have stayed with the company afterwards and started their careers. Taking on staff in this way is a fantastic way of introducing individuals to the working environment while allowing them to stay in education and continue to gain qualifications.

“When I started my apprenticeship I was mainly tasked with supporting the workshop and answering calls. I have come a long way since then, and I am now second line support working on some of the more challenging IT support tickets.”

Brad Baseley, Second line support technician

One of the most beneficial aspects of having so many apprentices joining the company year on year is the way that they’re all able to learn from each other and pass on the knowledge they’ve gathered from their own experience. The team all start in the workshop before progressing to answering the phone, assisting with support calls and moving up through the team, gaining the ability to deal with complex IT issues. Luke said “Once Kyle and Scarlett joined the team it was left for me to train Kyle as the new head-of-workshop and to help Jo with learning how we work at IT Champion. I am now a second line support technician and primarily help support the whole team and have become a reference point for the guys on the Front Line!”

The learning doesn’t stop when the apprentices get promoted to front line technicians, as they continue to take part in training on the job. We really appreciate the value of allowing the team to progress, with everyone getting the chance to gain extra qualifications and develop their careers in the direction that they choose. We demonstrate our appreciation in the team by providing them with the training they need to progress in their careers and advance in the sectors of the industry that they’re most interested in. The support team recently finished their first week of Windows Server training, held in house by an industry expert, and it was brilliant to see their enthusiasm and interest in the work.

Even more than this, we’ve also taken on 10 work experience students in the last few years and we have been happy to host 8 foreign students for work placement programmes. We relish the chance to give anyone a look into what it’s like to work in the IT industry and are always keen to welcome new faces into our team.

It’s brilliant to invest this way in local young people and is something we hope to continue to do in 2018, with our newest apprentice Charlie Farr having starting in March.
